The Rotters’ Club by Jonathan Coe

rotters

Some discussion highlights:

  • Everyone thought it was a little hard to keep track of all the characters
  • Those who didn’t finish it didn’t exactly hate it, it was just a little too hard to get into it
  • Lots of pop culture references, especially to music
  • Why did Ben write such a  scathing review of Cicely?  Maybe because he had built her up so high
  • There is a sequel to this book, called The Closed Circle.  It takes place from 1999-2003.
  • A lot of hippies were actually not that open-minded, especially when it came to women
  • Benjamin’s grandfather blamed him for the last 200 years of England’s problems – “That’s a point of view”
  • Malcolm & Lois mirrored Emil & Inger
