Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

Even though it was a smaller meeting last night, we had tons of fun and a good discussion.  Not everyone finished the book, or even liked it, but some of us loved it!

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Pilgrim’s Progress is allegory about being a good Christian, teaching the girls to get past obstacles
  • The girls were annoyingly perfect!
  • Even though it was written for the times, was it still unrealistic?
  • Sometimes the girls acted too young/too old
  • Each character like a different part of a whole person
  • Alcott trying to teach the reader lessons, like Marmee teaching her girls
  • What was the purpose of Beth’s death?  Sentimentality?  A moral lesson?  Or just because someone had to die?  She wasn’t strong enough to live.
  • The March girls were so nice, people just had to give them stuff!
  • Laurie marries Amy, but most likely still loves Jo – he just wanted to be part of the March family
