Even though it was a smaller meeting last night, we had tons of fun and a good discussion. Not everyone finished the book, or even liked it, but some of us loved it!
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Pilgrim’s Progress is allegory about being a good Christian, teaching the girls to get past obstacles
- The girls were annoyingly perfect!
- Even though it was written for the times, was it still unrealistic?
- Sometimes the girls acted too young/too old
- Each character like a different part of a whole person
- Alcott trying to teach the reader lessons, like Marmee teaching her girls
- What was the purpose of Beth’s death? Sentimentality? A moral lesson? Or just because someone had to die? She wasn’t strong enough to live.
- The March girls were so nice, people just had to give them stuff!
- Laurie marries Amy, but most likely still loves Jo – he just wanted to be part of the March family
