Cleopatra: A Life by Stacy Schiff

If you weren’t able to attend last night’s meeting, you missed out!!  We were treated to one a special “Cleocatra” quiz game, prizes galore, and tons of homemade food.  It was amazing!

We had some great discussions last night, even though most of us didn’t (COULDN’T!) make it through the book.

Highlights:

  • Slow read, really had to pay attention
  • Women in Egypt had a surprising amount of power
  • The importance of procreating quickly to pass down your line – like with males today, passing down their last name
  • Disturbing how the royal family members killed each other
  • Extravagance of the parties – take home a couch!
  • Did we really learn that much about Cleopatra?  There may not be that much to learn, since Rome erased her.
  • We didn’t learn much about Cleopatra as a mother
  • Cleopatra was a successful ruler in a turbulent time
  • Alexandria was so different from the rest of Egypt
  • Slavery in Rome and Egypt may have been different from past slavery in the U.S.
